Following a very bumpy flight from Perth, we safely landed in Melbourne on Wednesday evening. After successfully negotiating various mediums of public transport, we made it across the city to where we were staying in Yarraville.

Not having been to Melbourne’s western suburbs before we were pleasantly surprised. Yarraville has a really village-like feel to it with lots of great cafés and small, independent shops. I especially like the level-crossing which cuts through Yarraville’s main street; very quaint. It’s a generally quiet place, and certainly doesn’t feel like only 15mins from the CBD, yet in the evenings the area around the lovely 1930s Sun Cinema gets pretty lively.

By the time we dropped off our bags it was nearing 10pm, so we nipped across the street to a restaurant our new housemate recommended called Yim Yam. It’s a cosy, kitsch little place serving great, cheap Thai/Laos food. They were almost closing up when we got there so we sat in the window and watched our new neighbours passing by while we ate. I wolfed down so much satay that I felt a bit sick and then we wandered back across the road to bed.
